Welcome to our Q&A. We look forward to getting to know one another.

Clayton Swan

BA, MA, JD

Lawyer, Barrister and Solicitor

What did you do before law?

I was born in Lac La Biche where I lived until I was 9. My father was a veterinarian and he and my mother started their own vet clinic with an elk farm on the side. I graduated from Breton High School in 2006. I originally went to school at Providence University College where I obtained a Bachelors degree in Youth Leadership with the intention of becoming a youth pastor. While I was there I fell into the rabbit hole of Philosophy and decided to continue my academic career by getting a Masters degree in philosophy. I moved to Langley and attended Trinity Western University and wrote a thesis.

Throughout my University experience I have worked a wide variety of jobs but found that I often returned to residential concrete. My time on the farm and in construction has really helped me build an appreciation for the hard work that goes into facilitating my every day life and for those who do that hard work.

What kind of law do you really like to do? And why?

Anything that involves talking to people. I think what I can really bring to communities like Warburg, Thorsby and Breton is that I can translate between the technical and complicated legalese that the Courts require and the common sense plain language approach you find on a farm or job-site. I am a strong communicator and can get the information that people need to them in a way that they understand.

As far as areas of law go I will be doing most of the civil litigation, contracts and corporate commercial.

Why did you join the team?

I just graduated from High School and had no idea what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I planned on taking a gap year and seeing what life had in store for me. Soon after graduating I was given this amazing opportunity to work for West of the Fifth Law and quickly fell in love with law.

What do you enjoy doing outside of the office?

I used to be a dancer for 10 years, so I thoroughly enjoy teaching dance classes in my spare time. As well as spending as much time with my family playing cards or very competitive games of badminton.

Who does Ozy love most?

I am fairly confident that it is me. He loves showing me all of his toys, especially his rope which he demands that I play tug of war with him immediately after showing me. Of course I always let him win, but don’t tell him that though!
